The Flagler Humane Society is actively recruiting volunteers for its Ambassador Dog program to meet growing community demand. This outreach program utilizes our lovely, well-behaved furry friends to bring comfort and confidence to kids from the Paws for Reading program, where children read aloud to patient dogs like Trooper, a Great Pyrenees. The shelter currently has 12 volunteer dogs. With a new library opening in Bunnell, it anticipates twice as many dog ambassadors to serve both locations during the reading sessions every Wednesday from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

The Humane Society encourages you and your friendly dog to volunteer. All volunteer dogs must pass a temperament evaluation. Once qualified, the dog teams will regularly visit area assisted living and memory care facilities to participate in the Paws for Reading program. As Trooper’s owner, Meg Jobson, notes, the experience “really does fill a spot that I didn’t know.” It allows you and your dog to make a difference in the lives of both children and seniors.
