Disaster Emergency Animal Shelter

When disaster strikes, Flagler Humane Society is here for your pets. Our Disaster Emergency Animal Shelter provides a safe, supervised space for pets while their owners shelter in nearby shelters.

How It Works:
The emergency animal shelter is set up in the gym at Bunnell Elementary School. FHS staff and volunteers are on-site to oversee all animals, and designated visiting hours allow owners to come care for their pets.

During visiting hours, owners are expected to walk, clean, and feed their animals. Please come prepared — you know your pet best!

What to Bring:
Owners are responsible for providing everything their pet needs. Minimal supplies may be available for forgotten items, but please don’t count on it.

Documents:

  • Photocopied veterinary records (rabies certificate, vaccination records, medical summary, prescriptions, recent test results)
  • Proof of ownership
  • Pet description (breed, sex, color, weight)
  • Photographs of your pet
  • Microchip number and registry company
  • Owner and emergency contact information
  • Waterproof container to store all documents

Food, Water & Supplies

  • 2-week supply of food (in waterproof containers) and water
  • Non-spill food and water dishes
  • Manual can opener and feeding instructions
  • 2-week supply of any medications, plus medication instructions
  • One-month supply of flea and heartworm prevention
  • Leash, collar with ID, and harness
  • Pet carrier or crate with bedding
  • Toys
  • Pet first aid kit and book
  • Cleaning supplies for accidents

Special Needs Pets:
If your pet has special needs, please contact us before arriving. Special needs animals are housed in a separate location, and transportation arrangements must be made in advance.

First Responders:
First responders can house their pets directly at the Flagler Humane Society shelter. FHS staff will provide full care for those animals.

Before You Arrive:
To speed up the intake process, please download and complete the required paperwork before coming to the shelter.
