As human-bear encounters increase across Florida, animal advocates are pointing to unsecured trash as the primary cause of conflict.

During Speaking of Animals, Kate MacFall and Amy Carotenuto highlighted that bears are often drawn into residential areas by food sources such as garbage, bird feeders, and pet food. The Bear Wise program, which promotes the use of bear-resistant trash cans, is one solution they believe could significantly reduce incidents.

They urged communities to adopt preventive practices, stressing that coexistence is possible through education and proper waste management.
