How Often Should Your Pets Test for Parasites? Vets Say Once a Year

Few pet owners enjoy delivering fecal samples to the vet, yet veterinarians emphasize that prevention is essential to keep animals healthy. On Speaking of Animals, Dr. Frank Caporale recommended taking an annual fecal exam to prevent and detect intestinal parasites in cats and dogs.

Many intestinal parasites, particularly in young dogs and cats, do not leave any visible signs. “You won’t see worms in your dog’s stool,” Caporale explained. “Most of the time, we find microscopic eggs, and that’s what we look for.”

Even households that consistently use heartworm and flea preventatives are not entirely risk-free. Gaps in coverage can happen, and undetected infections can pose a threat to both pets and people. Dr. Frank recommends that pet owners bring a stool sample when they schedule a wellness visit. “Bring a little gift with you,” he joked. “If we don’t need it, we throw it away. If we do, it could save a lot of trouble.”
