Dr. Tierney Whalen Shares Signs and Solutions for Feline Upper Respiratory Infections
Upper respiratory infections (URIs) are a common infection in cats. On Speaking of Animals, Dr. Tierney Whalen from Flagler Animal Hospital reminded cat owners of the signs of URI, including nasal discharge, watery or reddened eyes, conjunctivitis, and labored breathing.
These infections spread quickly in multi-cat households or shelters. To prevent the spread, Dr. Whalen recommended quarantining a new adoptee for two weeks. Although most feline URIs are not contagious to humans, owners should still practice good hygiene between pets.
Cat owners can help their infected feline friends by using steam from a hot shower and warming wet food to enhance its aroma, making it more appealing to cats with dulled senses of smell. In extreme situations, antibiotics, antivirals, or topical eye medications may be recommended. Cat owners who detect a decrease in appetite, lethargy, hiding, vomiting, or diarrhea should seek quick veterinary attention.
