Guardian Angel
A Holiday Wishes Story

From the time I was six years old (in 1954) and watched Rin-Tin-Tin on black and white TV I have been in love with German Shepherds. Having been from Chicago and living in apartments, animals were usually not allowed. I wanted one of those dogs more than I wanted my next breath.

My life went on, I went to college, got jobs, my own apartments, married, divorced, had other pets but all these years later still didn't have a German Shepherd.

Fast forward to 2015. I retired and relocated to Florida. Palm Coast in particular. Having been an animal lover from the cradle, and still an avid animal lover, I joined Flagler Humane Society as a volunteer and was doing laundry. One day in comes a gorgeous male German Shepherd. He walked past the laundry room to go back into the kennels and I said to myself, "he's mine".

I quickly ran to the front desk to ask about this gorgeous creature that was brought in and was told he was a stray and needed to be held for 5 days hoping to find the owner. I put my name on the wish list for him.

After 5 days I got a phone call that said as soon as you can, get here, he could be yours. I dropped everything I was doing that moment and 20 minutes later, I was at the shelter.

I got him.

I waited for him to be neutered, also found out that he was heartworm positive but I didn't care if I had to re-mortgage my house, sell my car or live on the streets. I wanted him more than anything and was privileged to nurse him back to good health.

He's mine now and his name is Gunther and he is the best $100 I ever spent for anything. Ever.

This dog is so smart and so grateful that I took him in he would take a bullet for me. I just know it. As a single woman living alone he is my protector and my guardian angel.

As the saying goes, everything comes to he who waits. And boy, was he worth the wait. Not only is he smart and loving, but gentlemanly as well.

When I walk him I might as well be walking with a lion, a dolphin or any other supremely intelligent creature.

He has made me whole, he is my pride and joy, and I have never been happier to open up my home to an animal.

60+ years is a lifetime to wait for anything. But this guy still takes my breath away every single day when I look at him.
