Plucky Pets

Recently, I met a couple at a fundraiser who recounted an episode concerning their family parakeet. The pocket sized bird helped herself to some free flight time cruising their home when she stumbled upon a miniature opening at the top of a hand-crafted column that towered to the top of the vaulted ceiling. Tweety tottered into the teeny hole and tumbled twelve feet down the middle of the column. Her mournful tweets left them no choice but to summon the original artisan to strategically slice the column open to free the plucky parakeet. Not only was the column re-crafted and reassembled but an extra layer of goo was troweled into the life-threatening crevasse so even baby ants could no longer trespass.

The sweet story of Tweety’s people undertaking such incredible lengths to save their feathered family member reminded me of the many crazy corners our pets have painted themselves into. Oh, yes, and us, too.

Such as the time when a Flagler Deputy rescued a tiny kitten that rode alongside him on the patrol car seat as they made their way to the shelter but, when they arrived, that whacky tabby was nowhere to be found. Even weirder, the deputy could hear a baby crying in the distance. Oh, wait! That was no baby and that was no distance. It was that foolhardy feline meowing behind the dashboard and, mind you, that patrol car’s dashboard had WAY more gadgets than your average vehicle. Countless tools and manhours later, Calamity Kitty finally got extracted from the dash and, if memory serves me, that deputy ended up adopting a kitten.

One of my colleague’s dachshunds chased a ball through an iron gate, wedging herself between the bars. A beagle got lost inside an easy chair and when she cried, we thought she was trapped inside the wall. My California Grandmother watched a cat jump onto a shed roof and swore the tough little tabby had caused an earthquake. Well, an earthquake had struck at precisely that moment but I doubt old Frank the cat had anything to do with it.

I’ll bet one of your pets has performed some zany things that landed you in a hairball of a situation. We want to hear your crazy stories! They may not seem funny when you pay the bills or repair their disasters but you know we’ll find them downright hilarious. We might even ask to chronicle their hijinks in a future article!
